Nando's at Riverlands Mall

The first Nando's restaurant opened in Rosettenville in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1987. Today, there are Nando’s restaurants in twenty-six countries. A new branch just opened up in the heart of the historical area of Rondebosch at Riverside Mall. 

The RetailWave Technologies directors, Shawn Godfrey and Cornel Neethling, were invited to the official launch in February 2025, to see (and hear!) our sound installed. 

Music in restaurants

Restaurants often play music. Research has shown that music can have an impact on sales, influence emotions and enhance guest experience. Music matters, in other words.

A great soundtrack can:

• Enhance a restaurant experience

• Make guests stay longer

• Make guests spend more.

If you’re looking for evidence, Soundtrack in collaboration with HUI Research have done the biggest study in the world on the effects of music in commercial settings. The results of the study:

• 9.1% more sales when playing music that matched the brand compared with playing randomly selected popular songs.

• 15.6% additional dessert sales went when the playlist fit the brand.

• 4.3% drop in sales when random hits were played that were not a good brand fit, when compared to no music at all.

Testing the sound

When we took audio expert Walter Martinelli to the new Nando's South Africa at the newly developed Riverside Mall in Rondebosch, we made sure to check the sound in all areas of the restaurant, including the kitchen. 

After the sound audit, we ordered our own flame-grilled chicken, and that tastes as good as it sounds.
